Notarial papers, 1842-1846.

Two volumes of records kept by John James Loring as a notary public in Boston. The first volume is a register of bills and promissory notes notarized and protested (that is, made negotiable instruments by the notary) in Boston from 1842-46, including lists of promiser or acceptor, date, amount, where drawn upon, date due, etc. The second vol. contains "Public Instruments of Protest," two printed forms completed in manuscript in 1842, which relate to damage done to the brigs Fame and Charles Thomas. The protests were filed by Loring for the damage to be bourne by the merchants or the underwriters.
